Why your search rankings change between updates

In this article, we'll explain why your Google search rankings can change between SiteRank updates and how to decide whether you need to take action.

Why rankings move

A ranking is a snapshot of Google's results for a search term and its selected location at the time SiteRank checks it. Search results are continually changing, so a page can move up or down between updates even when you have not changed your website.

What can cause a ranking change

  • Google may reindex pages or change how it orders its results.
  • Competitors may publish, improve or remove content.
  • Your page content, links, structure or availability may have changed.
  • The relevance of results can vary for the selected search location.
  • A page may temporarily move while Google reassesses updated content.

How SiteRank calculates the change

The 'Change' column compares the latest recorded rank with the comparison period you select. Choosing 'Last updated', '1 month', '3 months', '1 year' or 'Earliest available' can therefore show a different movement for the same search term.

When to take action

Small movements are normal. Look at the 'Trend' over several updates instead of relying on one result. If a ranking continues to fall, check that the search term and location are correct, confirm that the relevant page is public and available to Google, review recent website changes and use 'Ranking tips' for improvement suggestions.
