How to transfer a .com, .net or .org domain to us
In this article we'll guide you through the process of transferring your .com, .net or .org domain to Webfactory. Using a .com or .org domain as your primary and only domain is free of charge. As a secondary domain a monthly fee will apply to cover the renewal cost of the domain.
Timeframe for a .com / .net / .org domain name transfer
The entire process of transferring a domain name can take anywhere from 5 to 7 days, although the duration might vary slightly based on how quickly your current domain host actions your request. Some factors that might affect this timeline include:
- The speed at which your current registrar approves the transfer.
- How quickly you respond to any required authorisation or confirmation emails.
- Any hold-ups due to inaccuracies in the domain's contact information.
Steps to transfer a domain to Webfactory
- Ensure your domain is eligible for transfer
- Before initiating the transfer process, ensure your domain meets the following conditions:
- The domain name has been registered for at least 60 days.
- The domain name is not within 60 days of being renewed or transferred previously.
- The domain name status is not locked, on hold, or in redemption.
- Before initiating the transfer process, ensure your domain meets the following conditions:
- Unlock your domain
- Go to your current domain registrar's website and log into your account. Find your domain settings or domain management area and unlock your domain. This action allows us to access your domain's information.
- Obtain the authorisation code (EPP Code).
- You need an authorisation code, also known as an EPP code or transfer key, to transfer your domain. Request this code from your current domain registrar. They'll likely email it to the administrative contact email on file for your domain. If you do not receive it, you need to double check your administrative contact email address is correct and check it has not gone into your junk mail folder.
- Initiate the Transfer on Webfactory
- Provide us with your domain details including the domain authorisation code.
- Verify the transfer.
- Once the transfer is initiated, your current host will send an email to the administrative contact email associated with your domain name. The email will contain a verification link. Click this link to confirm the domain transfer.
- Approve the transfer at your current registrar
- The last step involves approval from your current registrar. Each registrar has a different process, so check your email for any instructions from them. You might need to log in to your current registrar's site to approve the transfer.
- Wait for the transfer completion
- As stated above, the domain transfer process can take from 5 to 7 days to complete. During this time, your website will remain functional, and there should be no downtime.
Remember, every registrar is different and might require additional or slightly different steps. Always check with your current registrar if you're unsure about anything or need additional help.
