How to change your page's URL to a custom page URL

In this article, we’ll guide you through the steps of setting up a custom page URL in the website editor.

The Website editor now offers improved support for custom page URLs, also known as URL slugs. A URL slug is the part of the web address that appears after your domain name. For example, a page titled About Us could use the URL slug /about-us, resulting in a full page URL such as www.yourdomain.co.uk/about-us.

By default, page URLs are automatically generated from the page name. However, if you need a page to keep a specific URL, you can enable the 'Custom page URL' option and enter your own URL slug.

This can be useful for:

Maintaining existing website links.
Creating shorter or more meaningful URLs.
Improving SEO.
Removing unwanted numbering from generated URLs.

For example, a page could be called 'Our Team' while keeping the URL slug /about-us, or an article could use a shorter URL than its full title.

Setting-up a custom page URL

Step 1

From the website editor, go to the 'Content' tab.

Then, click on the 'Pages' section.

Select the page you want to update.

Click the ' Settings' icon.

Open the 'Search engine optimisation' tab.

Toggle the 'Custom page URL' option on.

Enter the custom URL slug you want to use.

Click on the 'Update settings' button to save your changes.The system will check whether the URL is available before saving.

Only enable a custom page URL when a page genuinely needs to keep a fixed URL. If you only enabled a custom URL temporarily to tidy up a generated URL, disable the option afterwards so the URL can continue to follow the page name automatically.

Removing numbers from a generated URL

Occasionally, a generated URL may include a number at the end, such as /about-us-2. This usually happens when the preferred URL is already in use.

To remove the number, you can temporarily enable the Custom URL option, edit the URL to your preferred version (if available), and save your changes.

Once the URL has been updated, it’s recommended to disable the Custom URL option again unless you want to maintain a custom URL. Leaving it enabled means you’ll be prompted to choose what happens to the URL whenever the item’s name is changed.

Alternatively, you can try renaming the item and then changing it back to its original name. In some cases, this may automatically regenerate the URL without the number.

Renaming items with a custom URL

If you rename an item that has a custom URL enabled, you’ll be asked what you’d like to do with the URL when you save your changes. You can choose to:

Use the newly suggested URL.
Keep the existing URL.
Enter a different custom URL.

Before saving, the system checks whether the selected URL is available. This helps prevent duplicate URLs and reduces the risk of unintentionally changing links to contents already published on your website.
