How to change your product's URL to a custom URL
In this article, we’ll guide you through the steps of setting up a custom URL for a product in the webshop.
The website editor supports custom product URLs, sometimes referred to as URL slugs. For example, a product called 'Blue cotton Hat' could use the URL slug /blue-cotton-hat, creating a more readable and SEO friendly web address.
By default, product URLs are automatically generated from the product name. However, if you need a product to keep a specific URL, you can enable the custom product URL option and enter your own URL slug. For example, a product called ‘Blue Cotton Hat’ could be renamed ‘Summer Blue Cotton Hat’ while continuing to use the URL slug /blue-cotton-hat.
This can be useful for:
- Maintaining existing product links.
- Creating shorter or more meaningful URLs.
- Improving SEO.
- Including important keywords within the URL.
- Preventing URL changes when product names are updated.
Setting up a custom product URL
From the website editor, go to the 'Webshop' tab.
Click on the 'Products' section.
Locate and open the product you would like to update.
Open the 'Search engine optimisation' tab.
Toggle the 'Custom product URL' option on.
Enter the custom URL slug you would like to use.
Click on the 'Update product details' button to save your changes. The system will automatically check whether the URL is available before allowing it to be saved.
Removing numbers from a generated URL
Occasionally, a generated URL may include a number at the end, such as /about-us-2. This usually happens when the preferred URL is already in use.
To remove the number, you can temporarily enable the Custom URL option, edit the URL to your preferred version (if available), and save your changes.
Once the URL has been updated, it’s recommended to disable the Custom URL option again unless you want to maintain a custom URL. Leaving it enabled means you’ll be prompted to choose what happens to the URL whenever the item’s name is changed.
Alternatively, you can try renaming the item and then changing it back to its original name. In some cases, this may automatically regenerate the URL without the number.
Renaming items with a custom URL
If you rename an item that has a custom URL enabled, you’ll be asked what you’d like to do with the URL when you save your changes. You can choose to:
- Use the newly suggested URL.
- Keep the existing URL.
- Enter a different custom URL.
Before saving, the system checks whether the selected URL is available. This helps prevent duplicate URLs and reduces the risk of unintentionally changing links to contents already published on your website.
